The Provident Bank of NJ | Reviews and Ranking | High Yielding (APY) Smart Checking Account

The Provident Bank of NJ was established in 1839 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of publicly traded Provident Financial Services (NYSE:PFS). The Provident Bank of New Jersey serves its customers through an extensive network of more than 80 branches throughout New Jersey and via telephone and online banking.

A highly popular checking account being offered by the bank is its high yielding Smart Checking account. With The Provident Bank of New Jersey's Smart Checking account, you get paid 1.51% APY for your deposits up to $15,000. The free Smart Checking account has no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements and Provident Bank reimburses you any ATM fees that you are charged for using another bank's ATM machine.

A couple of years ago, Provident Bank of NJ was paying out a 5.01% APY on its Smart Checking account, but has since reduced the rate to 1.51%, in parallel with the decline in the Fed Funds Rate. The high yielding Smart Checking account pays you interest as follows:

Note: The above APY figures are as of July 2013 and could increase or decrease in the future. All nationwide ATM fees will be refunded provided qualification requirements are met.

To earn the above stated interest APY rate, you’ll need to complete some basic activities each month:

Smart Checking Account Requirements – The Provident Bank

  • Conduct at least ten purchases using the debit card associated with the account
  • Receive at a minimum: One ACH direct deposit or at least one automatic debit
  • Maintain an online account with The Provident Bank of NJ

If you are unable to meet the above requirements for any particular statement period, your account will still function as a free checking account. It will, however, only earn a 0.05% APY and you’ll not be reimbursed for that statement period.

Along with its high interest paying Smart Checking account, The Provident Bank of NJ also offers other personal banking services and accounts including: home loans, CDs, IRAs, savings and credit for new purchases.
